Whats people lookup in this blog. Have a early 90's 4518 hydrostatic honda lawn tractor, frame #mzat-2003790 get no power to the coil. Had this problem two weeks ago so i put new coil, plugs and plug wires in (about $200). HAD THIS PROBLEM TWO WEEKS AGO SO I PUT NEW COIL, PLUGS AND PLUG WIRES IN (ABOUT $200). Bror, Yea, it does seem pretty unusual but on page 23 of my manual 'Hydrostatic Transmission Oil Level' it says, 'add 10W30 API SE, CC or CD. Do not use Honda Hydrostatic Fluid in this lawn tractor.' Now when I go the the 'specifications' page. Under the hydrostatic transmission section, it says '3.6 qts SAE 10W-30 API SH only.'

Honda 4518 Hi Pitch engine noise

| David Cadwell | When I start my rider i get a high pitch noise. If I engage the the mower deck the noise goes away. It doesn't appear to be a pulley of any kind. Noise is coming from engine somewhere. Engine seems to run fine. Needs carb rebuilt but runs good. Any advise? Thank you in advance! |
| Tom C | If the clutch isn't fully disengaging it can make some noise. Can you tell where the noise is coming from? A mechanics stethoscope can be big help to locate the source, especially if it as a bad bearing. Or it could be an intake air leak. Do you hear the noise at idle and at high rpm? You could spray around the intake manifold area with carb or break cleaner to see if the engine rpm increases. Tom |
| Radical Puffdaddy | My 4518 just started doing the same thing this spring. I am wondering if it is a bearing in the blade engagement clutch. Any ideas ? Solutions ? |
| Radical Puffdaddy | I just looked up the PTO clutch(blade engagement clutch) in the service manual and there is a radial ball bearing in there. I believe that might be it. Can anyone validate this ? Thanks. |
| Radical Puffdaddy | Sure enough, I tore in to the PTO clutch and there are 2 bearing in there. The one up front on the clutch itself looks like it can only be replaced with a new clutch. The other bearing, farther back, looks generic and can easily be replaced. The one on the clutch for mine was definitely bad, the other one farther back was smooth, but had one rough spot so I will replace them both. |
| RadicalPuffdaddy | Well I replaced both bearings and that solved the problem. The bearing in the clutch can be replaced by drilling the rivets out, then using bolts to put it back together. Mower runs as quiet as ever now. |
| RadicalPuffdaddy | Forgot to mention, the clutch from the dealer was $325 big ones, the bearing was less than $20. |
| John Brejcha | I pulled the clutch off of my 4518 and found a destroyed bearing. After drilling out the rivets and knocking it out , cannot find a part number. Could someone please forward the part number for the bearing they used, and where they got it from. thanks, john |
| Mike | The Bearing part numbers are as fallow. for the clutch it is KOYO 6006RS and for the front pully section that you drilled out it is NTN 6006LU. You can order both off of amazon. |
